Canon Macro EF 50 mm Lens Features

Canon Macro EF 50mm lens Review

One of the oldest lens in Canon’s catalogue is Canon Macro EF 50mm lens which can be an ideal partner for your close up photography and general portrait shots. It is also Canon’s shortest macro lens both in physical length and focal range.

Canon Macro EF 50mm lens is a compact and lightweight lens which can capture close up shots at 0.5x (1/2 life-size) magnification. The lens is a perfect macro option compatible for EF and EF-S cameras.

The Camera weighs mere 280gms which makes it perfect for handling anywhere for your photo shoots. Don’t just go on the light weight feature; Canon hasn’t compromised on the overall build quality which is highly robust. The lens mount is constructed from metal and the barrel is created from high grade plastic to ensure superb durability.

To guide you with every scale of your photography settings, the top of the lens is designed with a clear distance scale which provides magnification, focused distance and hyper focal marks for f/16 and f/32.

Features

The lens offers large f/2.5 aperture which can provide beautiful blur background to your pictures. Thanks to its 6 blades diaphragm which provides a natural defocused looks to the background. It’s just a trick of few focusing adjustment that can deliver you with the ultimate ‘bokeh’ image.

The lens is a floating 9 elements in 8 groups’ construction which provides excellent focusing performance at varying distance. The floating element makes sure that each element from the group work independently to achieve the respected focus for different long and near shots giving the sharpest possible image.

One of the disappointments is the lack of Ultrasonic Motor focusing in Canon Macro EF 50mm lens. Due to that, the lens delivers noisy pictures and result in medium-fast focusing.

The lens does not allow rotation of the front element with focusing ring. The minimum focus distance you can achieve is 0.23m which can help you take approx. 1/2 life-size images. The lens also allows usage of optional life-size converter which can let you achieve the magnification of 1:4 and 1:1 at higher focus distances.

The lens is just too perfect to use graduated and polarizing filters on the filter thread as it doesn’t facilitate rotation. The filter thread accommodates 52mm filter which is not seen in Canon lens as they generally use 58mm dimensions.

The manual focus of the lens is quite smooth due to bit loose focus ring. It is quite handy in making fine adjustments but the extreme mildness might bug you when you are in rush.
